EV Charging Stations — New Requirements for Detached Houses in 2026

As of 1 January 2026, updated regulations on the installation of home electric vehicle charging stations came into force. The amendment to the Regulation of the Minister of Climate and Environment, together with the update to the PN-HD 60364-7-722 standard, introduces specific requirements that — if not observed — may result in DSO acceptance refusal or loss of wallbox manufacturer warranty.

What Has Changed?

The most significant changes affect four areas:

1. Mandatory Residual Current Protection

Every charging station with a power above 3.7 kW must be protected by a residual current device of type B or type A with an RDC-DD module (DC current detection). This stems from the fact that modern wallboxes with DC charging capability can produce DC leakage currents that standard type A RCDs do not detect. The cost of a type B RCD is currently 350-600 PLN — significantly more than type A, but it is now an absolute requirement.

2. Required Minimum Connection Power

For 11 kW (3-phase) charging stations, a connection power of at least 14 kW is required, with appropriate reserve for other loads. 22 kW stations require a minimum of 25 kW connection power and coordination with the DSO (distribution system operator) — even for detached houses.

3. Mandatory Acceptance Protocol

After installation, a protective measurements protocol is required, performed by a person with SEP group 1 qualifications (operation, up to 1 kV). The scope of measurements includes:

  • insulation resistance measurement,
  • fault loop impedance measurement,
  • RCD trip test (DC and AC current),
  • PE conductor continuity check.

4. Location and Ventilation

In enclosed garages, the station must be installed in such a way as to ensure adequate air exchange (minimum 4 air changes per hour). In practice, this means many older garages will need mechanical ventilation upgrades.

Penalties and Consequences

Non-compliance with the new regulations is not directly penalised financially, but it carries real consequences:

  • the DSO may refuse connection or refuse to increase connection power upon discovering irregularities,
  • the wallbox manufacturer may reject warranty claims (most manufacturers now require acceptance documentation),
  • the insurance company may refuse to pay compensation in case of fire caused by improper installation.

What Does This Mean for Investors?

The average cost of a compliant wallbox installation is currently 3500-5000 PLN for an 11 kW station (including labour, type B RCD, cables and acceptance). This is about 800 PLN more than before the amendment, but guarantees full compliance and safety.

If you are planning to install a charging station, make sure the contractor:

  • holds SEP group 1 qualifications up to 1 kV (and can perform acceptance measurements),
  • uses a type B RCD or type A with RDC-DD module,
  • provides a complete set of as-built documentation with measurement protocol,
  • includes any potential main switchboard modernisation in the quote.
